Can patent rights be sold?

An inventor may sell or assign his/her patent rights to another party by filing an assignment documents with the Patent Office. The assignment may be for all of the rights to the invention, or for only a share of the rights. Quite often patent assignment documents are filed with the initial patent application, as, for example, when an employee is the inventor and the employer owns the patent rights to the invention under the terms of the employment agreement.
